If your car’s gas gauge is not working, you can fix it yourself. Here are instructions on how to do it:

  1. Park your car in a safe place.
  2. Remove the gas cap.
  3. Look for the gas gauge wire and remove it from the gauge.
  4. Disconnect the black and white wires from the gauge.
  5. Strip 1/2 inch of insulation off each end of two new wires and twist them together as shown in the picture below (black wire goes to black terminal, white wire goes to white terminal).
  6. Replace the gas gauge wire, reconnecting it in reverse order to how it was removed: black wire goes to white terminal, white wire goes to black terminal, and finally connect the gas cap screw-on connector (green arrow) back onto the gauge body (orange arrow). ..
