If you’re ever driving in a car and the transmission starts to make a weird noise, it’s time to replace the transmission. Here are some tips on how to test a transmission out of a car.

  1. Open the hood and remove the shift lever.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the car.
  3. Remove the shift linkage from the car by pulling it out of its hole in the floorboard.
  4. Disconnect both drive belts from the car by pulling them out of their clips at either side of the belt pulley on top of the gearbox (or by using pliers).
  5. Remove all four screws that hold down the cover on top of your gearbox (or use a screwdriver).
  6. Lift off your gearbox cover and discard it (you can reuse it if you want).
  7. Look inside your gearbox for any strange noises or vibrations coming from within (this is usually caused by metal against metal). If there are any, then your transmission is probably not working properly and you need to replace it!
